Psycho-educational assessment
utilizes standardized tests to
identify a student’s strengths and weaknesses across many areas of
functioning. “Standardized Tests ”
are tests with standard methods of administration that have been normed from demographically representative samples. There are literally hundreds of standardized tests that can be utilized to measure any number of skills, from group achievement (MEAP,
SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT) to individual intelligence (Woodcock Johnson (WJ), WISC, Stanford-Binet). In Psycho-educational assessment, these areas include but are not limited
to the
following: · Cognitive Development · Academic Achievement · Adaptive Functioning · Visual Perception · Motor Coordination · Visual-Motor Integration
·
Behavior · Emotion
Psycho-educational testing is conducted on an individual basis in a controlled setting to provide the most valid and accurate representation of the student's individual skill level and ability. It is important to remember, however, that classrooms are decidedly NOT controlled settings with innumerable multi-sensory distractions . Therefore, student performance on standardized testing is typically much better than student performance in the regular classroom.
